Hello everyone! I thought I would try something fun on a Friday. Instead of a regular post, here’s an article that I think many of us can relate to with just a few images.
We might all have different habits and routines when we write, but our struggles come in all kinds of forms. As we grow and learn as writers, the universal writing process unfolds before us. Here’s what that might look and feel to everyone.
The first spark of an idea…

…
There’s so much excitement!

…
You start daydreaming about all kinds of new ideas…

…
Time to start Brainstorming!

…
You start jotting down your first notes…

…
Or jumping in!

…
More ideas and more notes follow…

…
Time for the first line…

…
The first paragraph…

…
The first chapter.

…
The first bout of Writer’s Block…

…
You start churning out chapters regularly…

…
Tons of new ideas!

…
There’s no continuity in this draft anymore…

…
What if?

…
Writing a really exciting scene.

…
When you can’t figure out how a character simply walks into a room and it derails your writing for two weeks.

…
Writing an emotional scene.

…
You reached the climax!

…
You’re halfway there!

…
It’s all coming together.

…
You’re in the homestretch!

…
You reached the END!

…
Time to relax?

…
Get ready for round two: REWRITING!

…
It’s time!

…
You start rewriting chapters, putting in your new ideas, and enhancing your old draft.

…
Why did I write that?

…
That’s awful…

…
Never mind, this is great!

…
I can’t do this…

…
I CAN do this!!!

…
You keep learning more about writing and how to write better.

…
Why’d I use that word? What is wrong with me?

…
Why do my characters keep making dumb decisions?

…
The self-doubt creeps in.

…
Almost done rewriting!

…
You edit some more.

…
Time to get a second opinion on what you’ve got so far.

…
You’ve got a finished product!!!

…
The end! (Not really, but you just created another complete manuscript!)

Lol, I like the idea of a blog post in GIFs! I mainly do technical writing so a lot of my middle steps involve hitting a roadblock, taking Motrin, making half a dozen pointless meetings to try to get an answer on a process, and finally writing a paragraph before repeating the above. 😆
Some days it’s like that! I experience the same frustration with creative writing almost every day.
