intro
I thought I would do something a little different for this post. Recently, I started working on some sci-fi horror-related short stories, mostly because I wanted to branch out with my writing projects. So I decided to look for literary journals that would want to publish this kind of work. Here are six literary journals looking for horror!
Flash Phantoms
First off, this literary journal accepts horror short fiction up to 1,000 words, as well as micro-horror up to 100 words. They also look for what they call the Story of the Month, where they interview you about your work and give your story its own special page. They only accept submissions through Submittable. However, you can also ask for a 24-hour response for $5 and editorial assistance for $25.

Blood Moon Rising
This literary journal looks for, “all things ‘horror.'” According to their site, “We will accept all kinds of horror fiction, from vampire tales to “slasher” stories and anything is between (but it must not overuse profanity or other foul language). They look for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and artwork, as well as book and film reviews. You can also pay to advertise on their site!

Book Worms Horror Zine
Created by author R. Saint Claire, this zine looks for short horror works based on a theme every year. They just closed their submissions for their latest period, but you can find their full guidelines on their site. While they don’t accept reprints, they look for fiction up to 1,500 words and pay $0.08 per word. They also look for nonfiction, and they pay $25 for artwork. Additionally, they only accept submissions via mail, not email.

The Dark
They look for both horror and dark fantasy between 2,000 to 6,000 words. According to their site, they say, “Don’t be afraid to experiment or to deviate from the ordinary; be different—try us with fiction that may fall out of “regular” categories.” They publish monthly and pay $0.05 per word for original fiction. This journal also accepts reprints, which they pay $0.01 per word for.

The Dark Door
A newer publication from Ill-Advised Records, this journal “takes inspiration from 70s and 80s pulp horror fiction zines, and breathes new life into the format.” They look for horror-related artwork and fiction, paying $25 for art and $15-50 for fiction. This, however, depends on word count. Additionally, they also accept work previously published. Submissions are open year round.

Tales to Terrify
Lastly, this podcast looks for “short horror, dark fantasy, and other disturbing fiction.” According to their site, “We encourage you to challenge the definition of horror. Standard tropes and monsters are welcome, but give us your own unique take.” They accept simultaneous submissions, as well as previously published work. They also look for longer works between 2,000 and 10,000 words throughout the year, with payment $0.03 per word for originals and $0.01 for reprints.
