Literary journals that look for science fiction and fantasy sometimes specify if they want certain types of sci-fi and fantasy. So I thought I would compile a list! If you write steampunk, cyberpunk, solarpunk, and any other lesser-seen genres, check out the list below!
Cosmic Horror Monthly
This journal looks for weird fiction and cosmic horror pieces under 5,000 words. If you like H. P. Lovecraft-type stories or anything cosmic horror, this journal is for you. Their submission periods are January 1-7 and June 1-7. They also look for nonfiction and art. They also pay three cents per word! Their site says, “Weird and cosmic horror concepts” means everything from Lovecraft and his contemporaries to the role of pessimism in horror to a personal essay about the ways weird literature has interacted with your life. This is defined broadly on purpose—don’t self-reject!”

The Future Fire
First off, this journal looks for fiction, poetry, as well as art. When you look up their fiction submission guidelines, you’ll see that they look for certain genres of science fiction. According to their site, “We are particularly interested in feminist, queer, postcolonial and ecological themes, and writing by under-represented voices.” So they look for cli-fi and more! They pay $20 for stories over 1,000 words and $10 for flash.

StarShipSofa
This journal looks for original and reprint science fiction. They pay $50 per story. According to their site, “In a word: science-fiction. From the soft, social science fiction to the weird pulpy stuff to the vigorous hard SF and YA adventure. We welcome all sub-genres and all variety of punks in all their colours.” They also usually accept stories between 3,500 and 5,000 words, so keep that in mind.

Solarpunk Magazine
Like the title suggests, this journal looks for subgenres like solarpunk, but they also look for genres like climate fiction. According to their site, “Solarpunk Magazine publishes hopeful short stories and poetry that strive for a utopian ideal, that are set in futures where communities are optimistically struggling to solve or adapt to climate change, to create or maintain a world in which humanity, technology, and nature coexist in harmony rather than in conflict. We also publish solarpunk art as well as nonfiction that explores real world, contemporary topics and their intersection with the solarpunk movement for a better future.” All submissions are done through their Moksha portal. They also pay for fiction at a pro-rate of eight cents per word.
