Golden Age Sci-fi on My TBR

Welcome back to another SF/F TBR post, or TBR Tuesday as I started calling them. The other day, I went to one of my favorite second-hand books stores in town, and I discovered a bunch of older science fiction books, or “Golden Age” sci-fi, that I had either never heard of or have been meaning to read. I thought I would include them in a quick list for you to check out! Happy reading!

First, I want to include a more well-known science fiction story. I still have yet to read this one! Isaac Asimov wrote several books and short stories that make up this series, but I want to try to read at least Foundation (1951). It follows the Foundation, an institute dedicated to keeping the remnants of the Galactic Empire alive through records since it collapsed.

I recently just finished 2001 by Arthur C. Clarke, and I thought it was really well done (though to be honest, I still prefer the film). But when I found this book, I was intrigued by the premise. It centers around an alien invasion that’s actually peaceful, with the alien presence on Earth solving a lot of humanity’s problems. However, humans begin to forget their culture and identity.

I recently read the short story “The Black Destroyer,” and I thought it served as a good introduction to Van Vogt. I recently found this book and several others by him, and I wanted to read this one first. It follows a man named Morgan who is transported 400 years into the future after accidentally killing someone in a hit-and-run.

I read a little bit of Frederic Brown’s micro-fiction in the past. This book comprises several of his shorter stories. It also includes his famous one sentence story “Knock”: “The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door…”

This one technically doesn’t count as “Golden Age” sci-fi, but I digress. I found this one at a different haul, but I’ve been interested in reading Ursula K. Le Guin since reading “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” People often describe this work as feminist science fiction, which I want to read more of. It centers around Ai, a human sent to Genthen, another planet, to act as a sort of emissary for a confederation called Ekumen.

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for another writing post later this week, including another interview. Happy writing!
