Hi everyone! Welcome back to another interview post. I haven’t done one of these in a while, but author Macaulay Christian reached out to me with information about his book coming out in March. It’s called Holindrian & The Human Revolution. You can find a link to it here.
In the meantime, check out my interview questions below! Happy reading.
1) What does writing mean to you? What do you think the purpose of writing is?
Getting to create something new and having something to say. For me, creating a world, characters, and story that I become so invested in is extremely enjoyable and, hopefully, that work is something readers enjoy as well. I also think there is a responsibility (not to say a requirement, however) of all artists to have something to say through their work, whatever that might be.
2) What particular genre do you write in? Why are you passionate about that genre?
Science fiction with aspirations of literary science fiction. The genre takes humanity as it is and extrapolates where we could be, at some point in the future, depending on what choices we do (or don’t) make. Mythology helps us to understand our past and science fiction can help guide our future.
3) What does being a writer mean to you?
I don’t think of myself as a writer (and I think I loathe the idea of myself being the brand). Perhaps, one day I will. I’m just a person with a story to tell with a message I believe is worth sharing.
4) Where and how do you find inspiration?
I definitely lean more towards being an outliner rather than a discoverer when writing–not to say there isn’t a healthy amount of discovery, too, but having the framework of a book sketched out, for me, is tremendously helpful. The writing flows much more easily and quickly when I have an outline. Discussing plot threads or barriers to work through a bout of writer’s block is also helpful. Otherwise, the cliche that the best ideas (and dialogue) come in the shower is right on.
5) What are some of the challenges you face as a writer and how do you combat them when you sit down to write or even just prepare to write?
Whether I have an outline or not and have reached a point where I feel stuck, I tend to resort to more research. This may be reading or watching videos on the topic (at least tangentily), but, for me, expanding my understanding on something (eventually) helps me figure out whether I can pursue the idea or revise and proceed again.
6) Where can we find some of your writing?
Holindrian & The Human Revolution releases in March and, in terms of function, is the Silmarillion and the Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings. I am absolutely not comparing my work to Tolkien! But that’s the relationship of this book to what else I’ve been working on. I have a couple of excerpts posted on my website (www.macaulaychristian.com).
7) Where can we reach you?
Website: http://www.macaulaychristian.com
Facebook: Macaulay Christian – Author
Instagram/Threads: mlchrist1241
8) What are some interesting facts about you?
I bake my own sourdough bread.
