5 Speculative Anthologies Looking for Submissions

Literary journals aren’t the only places for science fiction writers to submit their short stories or flash pieces. Typically, anthologies are published several times throughout the year, centered around a theme. Obviously, you need to center your story around the theme, but this provides a whole host of opportunities to get your work out there. Check out science fiction anthologies looking for submissions below!

You might be familiar with Galaxy’s Edge if you know anything about the Mike Resnick Award, a writing award for a science fiction short story by an amateur writer. Both are published by Arc Manor. According to their site, “Our next Galaxy’s Edge anthology will be titled A Call of the Ocean, showcasing short stories about creatures and myths that live in the oceans and surrounding seas. Whether the stories are about mermaids, or selkies, or other magical beings existing in our world or on another, we’re primarily looking for fantasy or urban fantasy fiction. We will accept stories that have a hint of darkness or a science fiction element as long as the core substance of the story is fantastical. The editor will be very interested in stories that derive out of myths from diverse locations around the world, wanting to build an anthology of unique voices.”

If you write science fiction and fantasy, anything from steampunk to Afrofuturism to high fantasy, you need to check out Flame Tree. They publish several anthologies per year and take submissions throughout the year. According to their site, “We open submissions regularly throughout the year, looking for work to feature in a range of our print titles. These are professional, paid opportunities (at SFWA rates) for writers worldwide, whether new or established. Our anthologies are printed in beautiful, foiled hardbacks & distributed globally. They currently look for stories for several submission windows, including Gothic fiction, romantasy, horror, and more.

This publisher publishes several anthologies throughout the year. Their current submission period runs from November 1st to January 31st. According to their site, “Theme: Detectives, Sleuths, and Nosy Neighbors III – we’re searching for the murder mysteries, detectives noir, cozy, and humorous. This is our Mystery anthology and if you think it comes close to the genre, give us a shot.” They look for stories between 2,000 and 7,000 words.

Whisper House Press looks for horror submissions for their anthologies as well as horror flash fiction as part of their “Featured Stories.” They just published their latest anthology, Dread Mondays. Right now, they don’t have a new submission window for anthologies, but feel free to read up on their guidelines. According to their site, they look for the mundane in horror. They write, “Consider that what’s mundane to one may not be mundane to another… the voice of the story should bring the terror of the mundane for that character to the fore.”

Check out these anthologies for upcoming calls and submission windows. Happy writing, and see you all next week for another book review!
