Welcome back to another post about literary journals! A lot has been happening this week, including preparing for my upcoming participation in Sci-fi Month, so plenty of science fiction posts are on their way! In the meantime, I wanted to look at horror and dark fantasy, a little departure from the norm.
Check out seven literary journals that look for horror and dark fantasy submissions below!
Coffin Bell
This journal looks for “dark” literature. They are open year-round, and they want flash fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and other genres. They have four different days that they release their issues as well, though they don’t have themes.
You can find their submission guidelines and what they’re looking for here.
The Dark
They look for both horror and dark fantasy between 2,000 to 6,000 words. They publish monthly and pay $0.05 per word for original fiction. This journal also accepts reprints, which they pay $0.01 per word for.
You can find their full guidelines here.
Dreams and Nightmares
This journal mainly looks for poetry, though they sometimes accept short fiction. In their guidelines, they state that while they mainly look for SF and fantasy, they accept horror/dark fantasy. For poetry and fiction, they pay $12. They also look for artwork, which is also $12 on acceptance.
You can find their full guidelines here.
Grim and Gilded
They read year-round, though they also only publish a few poems and stories per month. On their guidelines, they say, “We appreciate pieces that contain elements or exist fully within the realms of fantasy, horror, high fantasy, magical realism, science fiction, urban fantasy, horror, contemporary fantasy, fairy tales, Gothic, steampunk, and thriller.” Additionally, they look for fiction of up to 6,000 words.

Allegory
Also known as Allegory Zine, they look for fiction and nonfiction in fantasy, horror, and sci-fi genres. They also ask for fiction and nonfiction, with $15 upon acceptance. They have very specific guidelines, so be sure to read them carefully.
You can find their full guidelines here.
Pseudopod
This journal looks for horror, dark, and “weird” fiction. However, their guidelines say “Originality demands that you’re better off avoiding vampires, zombies, and other recognizable horror tropes unless you have put a very unique spin on them.” They look for fiction. They’re also pro-rate, paying $.08/word for original fiction.
