Change is Coming!!!
So I didn’t post anything last week as I usually do, and the main reason is because I realized something. I realized that I had started this blog with an idea in mind, and I don’t think I’ve been living up to it as much as I should.
This blog has had a big learning curve to it, that’s for sure. There’s all sorts of stuff out there talking about carving out your niche or market with your blog, making sure not to talk to too general of an audience, finding your community. And when I started this, I had a few niches in mind, but I didn’t know how to go about discussing them. I kept making excuses, until I sat down one day and realized that I wasn’t talking about what I really wanted to talk about.
So I spent a lot of time trying to come up with new ideas. I also sent the blog under construction for a little while, and I’ve created a new page with the writing I’ve introduced in past posts.
I think this is also where the learning curve comes in, and it’s been a real eye-opener for me as a writer.
A few months back I entered the WOW! Women on Writing flash fiction contest and gained honorable mention for my piece “After Hours.” At first, I didn’t think to include this piece on here or on my website because “honorable mention isn’t anything special.” Don’t get me wrong, I was grateful for the experience, but I was still left a little frustrated because, then, I had the mindset that honorable mention wasn’t anything worth talking about with others.
But then I realized that an achievement is an achievement, no matter how small it seems to the writer. I’d like to carry this advice to other ideas I’ve been concocting for this blog, because I make mistakes and learn from them (hopefully). And while you guys have questions, I have questions too, and I need advice (even from everyone on here!) as well.
I said on the home page that I wanted to see where writing can go, and also mentioned a couple other niches (mathematics and Anglo-Saxon literature) that I wanted to write about as well. Like I said before, I kept making excuses, thinking “I have too many niches to actually talk about” or “Nobody wants to hear about this. They know what they want to hear and it’s not what you have to offer.”
But I need to ignore my own head. I want to live up to what I started out with and see where else this blog (and writing) can go. In the meantime, I want to continue with making posts about writing, literary journals, and other specifics, because I legitimately enjoy that. Just be on the lookout for new pages, new topics, and a growing platform. (I hope in the near future to create activities, contests, and other things of that sort, including more guest posts. Also, I haven’t forgotten about that Anchor podcast!).
